I bought this timing light to replace a a generic, but well constructed chrome metal timing light that I have owned for over 36 years. The old strobe simply was not bright enough. I suppose it has lost some of it's brightness over the years.
Conditions were not ideal; I had to perform the timing adjustment in full sun as the boat was in the water at the dock, and no shade was available.
I was dealing with very obscured, practically invisible timing marks on my 1999 Sea Ray 7.4L MPI (basically a GM 454 cubic inch truck engine). The flywheel was rusted, there were no notches or other physical mechanical marks, and I could barely make out a rusty white paint spot indicating 8° BTDC which was the correct spec for properly tuning the engine. In fact, I couldn't even see the faint white paint mark until I employed the bright strobe from this light. Once I found the mark, One of the great features of this light is a button to continuously and rapidly flash the strobe for use as a bright flashlight. Once I found the very faint mark on the flywheel, I was able to enhance it with some office type white out.
I was totally amazed at how bright the strobe was on this new professional model! The digital tach is built right in, easily read, and available at the push of a button. There is a selector for four or eight cylinders and it could not be any easier to use. The induction system allows you to operate the light without the need for direct contact with the distributor secondary terminals, or the conductors in the ignition wires. You just place the induction clamp around the number one ignition wire, clamp the positive lead to the + side of the battery and ground the negative lead to a handy ground on the engine block. This timing light can be used on both positive ground and negative ground vehicles. There are special instructions for hooking it up with negative ground vehicles. The product is very well constructed and has all the signs of a top notch tool. I'm extremely happy with my purchase and recommend it without any reservations!
used one time and tried to use again and it doesn't work. will return later today and want a full refund. Also, the container stated there was an instruction manual included. there was not. craftsman products are getting worse and worse.
I used this on a friend’s MGB when we installed a new distributor for it. We were easily able to get the advance set to where we wanted at the engine speed we needed and it runs beautifully now. Super fast to use so it only took us a few minutes to do the job. A GRAT tool to have in the garage.
Light works great. ONLY issue was the shipping package. There was no packing material to keep the Timing Light from being damaged. The shipping box was trashed and the timing light package was damaged. The light works, glad its under warranty.
So much better than my old Craftsman timing light!
I have been buying Sears tools for fifty years.
I borrowed one of these from a friend. It fried it self after using it for a few minutes. I bought him a new one and since I figured it was just one of those things I bought one for my self because I liked the features. BIG mistake. I used it two times and it has completely quit working. I wouldn't recommend this piece of junk to my worst enemy. The only reason I gave one star is because that is the lowest they will accept. So please ignore that. Plus the fact that the nearest sears store is now a 45 minute drive I very seriously doubt I will ever buy another sears product in the future.
Got this instead of buying a cheap one where I would need a separate rpm gauge. Easy to hookup and easy to use!
