Purchased this item after reading reviews about it's poor quality. I learned that the assembly process needed some common sense as the directions were a bit inadequate. Once assembled, I was very pleased with the result - the product is strong and all of it's advertised functions work well. Bad reviews drove the price to the clearance level - take advantage of the low price when you can - and beware of reviews, both good and bad.
The purpose of this item is to CLAMP material to be worked on. The ends of the screw arm assemblies are round and the handles have a matching round hole in them. Thus ALL the clamping force is taken on the small screw that holds the handle in place. One of these broke the first time the item was used and the "clamp" tightened. The shaft and handle fitting should be mechanically sound and the screw should only be there to prevent the handle falling off. Simply making the end of the screw arm assembly and matching handle square in section (or even splined) would have prevented this. Very poor engineering design. Item is not fit for the purpose.
Seem like a good work table until you find missing parts to get it to work the way it is suppose to. call customer service only to tell you we cannot get those small parts to you instead here's $5 and go away. Not happy bring it back they say. What I just spend time putting this thing together just missing 3 small parts. You think they can just send it to you. I have the parts number and see it on their parts direct online website. But no they cannot do that. Very very frustrating to buy from Sear.com
This table is good for a little setup
My very first negative review about a Craftsman product. Many other poor reviews are right on the money...I had no problems putting it together, but wow, did things not line up. The angle/protractor is off by 1/4"!!! This isn't my alignment issue...it actually measures a 1/4" longer on the front board as compared to the back when measured from the edge! I bought a B&D years ago and I've loved it ever since...but there was such a great price on this one! Sadly, I did get what I paid for. The clamp boards are an MDF/particle board mixture that crumbled the fist time I clamped it. The coating around the edges was slightly chipped when it came out of the box and now after a year, all the edges are bare wood...I've used the thing just 4 or 5 times. IT ALSO DOES NOT FOLD FLAT...for those that care. It's awkward to store because of that. Sorry Craftsman, the only time you've let me down out of dozens and dozens of purchases.
You get what you pay for here. Nothing spectacular, but it does what it is designed to do.
The boards that do the clamping are made of Particle board. Very cheap for Craftsman. NOT AT ALL WHAT I EXPECTED!! one even fell from about 2 feet while putting it together and chipped the corner off. The markings on top of the boards to help with aligning projects do not even line up with each other with the table closed. Apparently came from China. I will have to do some deep consideration before my next craftsman purchase. That is a shame because I have a lot of craftsman things that I have purchased in the past that I am happy with but not this one.
