I purchased this from a friend who lives in a very high wind area here in So. Cal., where we get the famous Santa Ana winds. He used the sand base but, as I have a wood deck, I didn't take the base. You MUST secure the base with suitable fasteners, such as lag screws on a wood base. At 11.5 feet, this umbrella creates a LARGE amount of force in even a light breeze and will tip over because of the leverage. Here, we use the umbrella for shade, not rain protection; the So. Cal. sun is UV10+ and it hurts. The vertical operation is smooth and sturdy, and the rotational operation works well, but after some years of use, it requires lubrication. Also, I secure the rib closest to the support arm to that arm with velcro tape; I insert the tape between the rib and the fabric, then wrap it around the support arm. That keeps the umbrella from flapping in the breeze which, because of its size, it does quite readily. AND, I just ordered a new canopy. I'm amazed to find I can get spare parts after owning this for six years. Nice job, Sears!!! Oh, and ALWAYS put this product in storage for the winter. You'll be glad you did.
I gave this umbrella 1 star because there was nothing LOWER. Good design, functional, provides good shade. Problem? The cable inside the adjustable arm broke during the third year of use. I called the company. They DO NOT sell replacement cable NOR provide instructions on how to replace it. The 3 people I talked to at the company all seemed to think that replacing the entire arm and umbrella for about $140 plus shipping, taxes, etc. was a reasonable alternative – to replace a broken $2 piece of cable! One “technician” even implied that since I live in the south I probably had it out in the heat and sun longer than most. When I sought clarification, he said that heat, sun, and rain all cause the cord to deteriorate faster. So apparently they design the umbrellas to be used in some of the arid regions of Antarctica – where there is little heat, sun, or rain. I will NEVER purchase ANYTHING made by Garden Oasis again. Their design of this item and corporate policies are sufficient to drive me away. I refused to take the company’s hair-brained explanation and decided to tackle the repair myself. I can see why they don’t sell the replacement cable nor provide instructions. It was quite an ordeal, but I finally succeeded. I used parachute cord and it all seems to be operating OK again. Unless you just want a season or two of use and/or you have multiple mechanical engineering degrees to repair it, STAY AWAY! You’ve been duly warned!
The umbrella lasted less than two years and the gears that keel the umbrella from swinging by locking down barely a year and a half. Replacement parts are not available, and the umbrella has no replacement either.
BROUGHT THIS ITEM IN 5/28/2016. WENT TO USE 6/11/17 LEVER IS CRACKED THAT CONTROLS HOW THE UMBRELLA MOVES AROUND. QUALITY IS CHEAP PLASTIC! CALLED ABOUT WARRANTY OR REPLACEMENT TOLD OVER A YEAR. POORLY MADE. DO NOT BUY!
It covers the areas that I wanted
the umbrella out of the box arrived with a bent spoke and after just 3 openings the bar began to crack at the seam...what a pain to take this all apart and bring back for a replacement!
