Originally bought the similar, smaller model years ago. It didn't last too long, maybe a season and a half. I then went with an ultrasonic. The air in my home was then filled with fine white dust (minerals spewed into the air when using hard water) which strangely caused the flames on my gas stove in the next room to turn pink. After developing a chronic cough from breathing in that dust, I got rid of the ultrasonic and decided to give this type of humidifier another chance, purchasing this larger model. I think I've now had this humidifier for 3 years and it is still operating well. I am using the actual Kenmore 14906 replacement filter this time around, instead of a bargain brand. I think that's the reason this humidifier is lasting much longer than the smaller one did. It is mold and mildew resistant and fits well into the unit. When I used the cheaper replacement filters with the smaller unit, it eventually emitted a musty odor, probably from bacteria buildup. I am filling it with water from an undersink water filter instead of out of the tap, since my water is very hard. Not all of the minerals are being removed, but this filtered water is better than ruining the unit with tap water. A filter lasts about 8 weeks or so -- when I see the unit running for days without running dry, I then know it's time for a change. I clean out the reservoir area with Soft Scrub, and it is then good as new. I also blow any dust out of the fan portion with my vacuum. Then it goes back to running well, going for less than 24 hours on two fills of the tank. I have it on F2 fan speed and it makes the dry air in my house comfortable again. I recommend this unit strongly -- no mold buildup (using the actual name brand Kenmore replacement filter), and no harmful dust to breathe into your lungs (ultrasonic humidifier).
I purchased this item yesterday and when I set it up the "F" was flashing which indicates that I need to fill the unit. It was full. Also, I was unable to change the fan setting. After looking at the manual it seems there is a part missing (Support, Float #830496-2). This part is no longer available. So, Sears on line offered me coupons. Coupons for what??? They also said I might be able to find a replacement part in my local parts store. What? Now I need to go searching for an after market part? I want a humidifier that works. I'll take it back to the store today. I hope I can return it as others have said they couldn't return it.
Very efficient, quiet, keeps large area humidified. Only challenge is that filling the tank is a bit cumbersome, especially for older people.
Works good. The new wick elements are made very cheaply...don't even fit right (the Sears factory replacements) and they are overpriced. But the unit itself works well.
This is our second one. We wore out the first one after 7ish years!
This is the second time we have purchased this model. The first one was several years ago and worked great until the spring lost its spring.
i bought this kenmore evaporative humidifier for our childrens rooms and its great. works very well and doesnt use much energy. also very quiet and doesnt need much work to use.
