After doing careful research, I though I knew what I was looking for in humidifiers. I started in a local (small-town) Sears store where the selection was sparse, and found this unit. Quite honestly, this very basic and low-priced unit was not what I'd intended to buy, but I was desperate to take a humidifier home & bought this as a "back up" plan. Yes, I did find a "bells & whistles, ultrasonic, no-filter, hot-shot" unit at a big box store, but after running both units for 48 hours, the pricey one went back and we've kept the Kenmore Cool-Mist because it is so easy to use and it easily raises the humidity in our home without the white dust and odor of the souped-up model. In fact, I headed straight to KMart and found a second, larger Kenmore Cool Mist unit of the same basic design for our family room. Both are quiet on the low settings and we actually enjoy the subtle white noise at night. Yes, we will have to replace the filters in a few weeks, but I've found those online and don't expect a problem or much expense there. We're so pleased with the no-frills, functional, operation of our Kenmore humidifiers. Forget the claims of more expensive units and stick with the Kenmore cool mist humidifiers. You won't be disappointed.
Don't buy this! I bought is as a single room humidifier. When filling the tank in the bathtub I accidentally dropped it about 1 foot from the faucet to the floor of the bathtub. The tank ruptured rendering the unit unusable. Being broken, I decided to take it apart. Very easy to disassemble. The first thing I noticed is that the wheel that allows you to dial in the month isn't attached to ANYTHING! It has absolutely no effect. On some humidifiers changing the date increases humidity in dry/cold months like January. Not here, its just fake! This is an evaporation based unit, it has a cheap cardboard tube which soaks water and a fan which evaporates the water. This does not function like a Crane or other decent humidifiers. In my unit, which we only used for a month their was already MOLD growing on the cardboard. On the positive side I got a nice two speed motor and propellor blade when I disassembled the unit.
