I was pleasantly surprised at the inside space and layout. This refrigerator has more freezer space because the ice maker is in the door. It runs very quiet and the smooth finish inside and out are easy to keep clean. I love it!
Purchased this as a replacement for an 18-year old Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator. Delivery and set up went quite well but the first thing I noticed was the loud noise it made when the icemaker is filling with water. The noise it makes is loud enough to drown out the volume of the TV. Also, this refrigerator was missing the charcoal filter for the air cleaner and it looked like it came like that from the factory. I confirmed this when I called the service number and was informed that a technician would have to perform the installation. This and the noise from the icemaker was the deciding factor in returning and exchanging this refrigerator. A disappointing experience with the "new" Kenmore.
Firstly, the delivery department, company, whatever it is, is laughable excuse for a purported commercial business. After establishing a delivery date at the time of purchase, I was immediately contacted with a delay. Fine, no other recourse so I go along with the later date. After confirming the delivery date, the delivery time window was established which was 1:45PM to 3:45PM on a Tuesday. I planned on getting home by 1:30 to meet the delivery guys, and remove items from the old fridge. NOPE. These guys show up at 12-noon. My wife, who was on her way out the door to run errands and pick up our daughter, was stuck there until I scrambled out of my place of work earlier than expected (thanks for jeopardizing my job by the way), to meet them as soon as possible because there was no way they could come back later. The only other way was to reschedule. I was seeing red. By the time I got there, they had already installed the fridge, and left with the old one before I had the chance to remove items from it. They left styrofoam trash on the driveway and front lawn, and apparently removed our front door to get the old fridge out. It would have been nice if they had properly installed the hinge pins when putting the door back together. The fridge was poorly leveled, which I had to correct, leading me to think that I should keep an eye on it in case the hose installation springs a leak. By the way, I purchased a new hose kit, but have no idea if they actually used it unless I pull the whole fridge back out.
The refrigerator itself is cheaply made, and much louder than expected. I have a very old Frigidaire in the garage that isn't anywhere near as loud as this thing. The drawers, shelves and door bins are thin, cheap, and seem like they will break any minute. The partition in-between the fridge and freezer sections gets incredibly hot to the touch. I brushed against it with my arm and instantly felt a burning sensation - not a great feature with a child going in and out of the fridge. The thing wobbles when you open and close the doors too. The water dispenser is in an odd spot, sitting eccentric on the ice chute, closest to the front of the fridge, so you need be careful where you push your thinner cups against the dispenser pad in the back, lest you like being splashed. Also, the water is not chilled through the fridge, just house temperature water straight from the back. Compared to the older Samsung that this fridge was to replace, it is very lacking in features, especially for the purported price tag (we got it on "sale" while it seems like the "sale" is at the higher end retail price for what we got). The only redeeming feature of this fridge is the fact that it is a counter-depth model in white. Otherwise, I feel like I got gypped. This is the first and last time I ever make a major appliance purchase online, sight unseen.
We were very happy with this refrigerator for about a year and a half. A week ago it stopped making ice. Sears technician identified a broken wire at the bottom of the freezer door and said that the only way to fix it, is to replace the door, $2,000 in parts and labor.
We bought a beige one of these in our previous house and loved it. Quiet, good layout, attractive. When we bought a new house, the kitchen was white so we didn't move it. We've now bought a white one for the new house and love it just as much!
Other reviews have talked about this refrigerator being loud, but a lot of them sounded like they were talking about the ice maker and/or dispenser specifically, which are, in fact loud. But the compressor is also quite loud, and has a set of noises, one of which was high-pitched and annoying enough that I genuinely considered sending the thing back. But I have a kitchen with an annoying and shallow refrigerator nook, and all the rest of my appliances are white and I don't want to replace all of them, so I had few options and this was more or less the least bad one.
I ended up lining the refrigerator nook with speciality sound-dampening panels - I have a recording studio, so I have some knowledge in this sort of thing - and that got it down to a reasonable level while preserving adequate airflow. (I also added a chimney in the back of the overhead cabinets, which will help quite a lot in general.) I managed to kill the high-pitched ring entirely, but it's _still_ louder than the 18-year-old GE it replaced (and which is no longer made). But... I can live with it.
I should say that it's not the loudest new refrigerator I've ever had. I manage commercial property and have dealt with quite a few. But it's definitely on the louder end, noise-wise.
I like the ice maker, though. Better than the one in the old fridge, and the freezer is pretty roomy. It should come with one more shelf than it does, though.
