First off, let me state that this is a very good Air Conditioner. I have been using it for a week and am impressed with the quality and performance of this unit. Now the discussion: This unit is a portable AC unit, meaning you need to vent this to the outside with the included hose and window kit. That means you need to ensure you have the ability to do that. In the case of my older windows on the north side of my house, it is no problem (they are sliding windows). On the south side of my house I have the crank-out casement windows, so I will need to make a custom “screen insert” that will take the place of the screen (which is on the inside of the window) to connect the AC hose to. This is not a problem, but will take a little work. A custom cut piece of plexiglass from my local hardware store and a little dremel action will alleviate that issue. The unit seems to dehumidify very well. I am emptying over a gallon a day of water. I have it running to a bucket instead of the internal tank for ease of emptying it. Hooking up the included hose is very easy, and if you find you need a longer hose, most hardware stores will carry the hose in custom lengths. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and as such my basement will require some dehumidifying in the winter (something I have never done but should, as my humidity in the basement can run over 60% in the wet winter, which is not good). The large vent hose does not need to be connected for dehumidifying, so that will be an easy one. The remote is good. I like the remote temperature function, but honestly I have been using the thing in max cool mode (set to AC, high fan and temp of 62) because of the incredible heat we have been experiencing in Seattle recently. It has a nice backlight, generous functions and seems to work well overall. The performance of the unit is superb. A 12,000 BTU unit should be able to cool a large room or multiple smaller rooms, which this can. The one thing to note is that to cool multiple rooms you need to have time and a fan to move the cooled air. To expect adjoined rooms to be cooled in 20-30 minutes is not realistic for any cooling device as you need to also move the air, and typically the AC unit fans are not enough to do room-to-room air transfers. I have a casement 12,000 BTU Kenmore unit downstairs (that I built into the wall permanently) from 2007-2008 (an older R-22 unit). It performs just as well as the older Kenmore, but this portable unit is much quieter. Speaking of noise – the unit is quiet for a 12,000 BTU AC unit. They all make noise. Compressor noise, fan noise. It is a fact of life, and I have yet to see a really quiet AC unit unless you have a good central AC system or a nice split AC system, both of which are far beyond the price point of some units like this. I will say that this unit is much quieter and gentler than my 2007 Kenmore Casement AC unit. When that compressor comes on, you know it all over the house – the jolt, the dimming of lights…
Do not buy this. It worked all night just trying to cool off the heat made from the exhaust tube. After purchasing i found out it didnt have a compressor like traditional ac units that go in windows. I took it back after 12 hours and my house was 8 degrees hotter then when i turned it on. I exchanged it for a window unit and within an hour my house was cooler already.
Cold air comes out, but it does NOT cool a small room as stated, just the very immediate small area and putting a fan behind the unit does help, but not worth the money.
I bought this over the summer and while I've only called upon it for cooking action a few times, it has let me down each time. At best, this might be able to 200 sq ft., but nothing beyond that. The noise it generates will ensure that no one sleeps in the same room as it operates. And last but certainly not least, the plastic hose/vent that they give you is by far made of the cheapest materials; the entire vent system is complete trash, so if for some reason you still think buying this is a good idea, plan to install/make your own vent for it. Other than that, it makes for a pretty good paperweight.
This A/C is awesome! It cools off 2 rooms.
Unit cools very well, very impressed.
