Clear the Air
This item is a great replacement for our old jenn-air unit. 2 weeks in and so far so good.
We?ve used this now for 1.5 years after replacing our ancient Jen Air coil cooktop, and know the good, bad and the ugly of this Kenmore. Yes, it boils water pronto. The griddle element is nice, as is the inner burner for a small saucepan. The downdraft is super strong. It gets clean with a razor blade, soap, water, elbow grease, and the cooktop cleaner for burned on stuff. The bad: no matter how much I?ve babied it the surface is scratched everywhere. The men of the house won?t even cook on it for fear of scratching it with ?real? cooking. I bought an induction hotplate (which I really like) when we purchased this cooktop for them to use our cast iron on. I gingerly lift pots and pans, never drag or bang pots on the surface, yet the surface is full of scratches. Hot pasta water splashing on the black metal border has permanently discolored the metal, which has also scratched. The burners don?t seem calibrated, some being hotter than others. The ugly: The downdraft is impossible to clean. It is too narrow and deep to get my arm down it to scrub well. I?ve used narrow bamboo poles, and even the point of a real arrow wrapped in soapy cloth to try and get the gunk out of the corners. Impossible. Go anywhere near the island and it smells of rancid, rotting grease, and no amount of baking soda, soap, vinegar, will make it smell fresh. If I had paid full price for this unit I would be totally disgusted with this product. I need to get a few more years out of it before replacing it; a crappy JenAir coil cooktop would be an improvement right now. I have always been an avid cook, but have found myself avoiding cooking since owning this cook-unfriendly cooktop.
There needs to be extra space in cabinet left and right to avoid combustible surfaces. Make sure your cabinet has the space or you will be cutting into the cabinet and loosing a couple of drawers.
I purchased this stovetop the week before Christmas and it performed well. Easy to install however connecting the downdraft to an existing connection was challenging.
We have had extremely poor customer service with out purchase of this cooktop. The customer service representative who assisted us did not know how to use the computer system and we were in the store for almost 2 hours waiting for her and her manager to figure things out. After all of that, we were told we'd have to wait an additional week for delivery. Understandable but that's still another week without a stove. The day before it was supposed to be delivered we received a notification that our delivery had been rescheduled for a week and a half later than originally planned. We called to find out why and were told there was a manufacturers delay. When we first ordered the cooktop we were told it was already in the warehouse so why now the delay? Everyone I talked to on the phone gave me vague answers or none at all or shifted me from person to person. Overall very disappointed with my experience shopping with Sears. This was the first and last time I buy an appliance from Sears. When it's all said and done I will have been without a stove for almost a month while waiting for this one to be delivered.
Works wonderfully and looks great.
