In 35 years of marriage, we have always purchased either Kenmore or Hoover vacuums (I think that Kenmore is made by Hoover). We have had bagless uprights (never do that again) and canisters. I will always buy the bagged version of any vacuum - the bagless ones are way too hard to clean. When this one arrived about 1 month ago, I was so impressed with the design changes that Sears had made since our 30+ year old bagged canister vacuum. The first thing that impressed was the fact that changing tools was super easy, especially going from the power head for carpets to the bare floor tool. There's no bending and it's truly just a snap to do it. Second, I love the telescoping wand. Our old Kenmore required disconnecting the power cord running from the handle to the power head, bending to disconnect it, and then physically handling the bare floor tool to insert into the hose extension. Not so with this model. Just a press of a button and the power head disconnects. Press another button on the storage case for the bare floor tool, stick the hose extension into the floor tool and you're good to go in less than 5 seconds. The next thing that I noticed was that the Powermate head for upholstery and stairs is now electrically powered - not by a vacuum turbine. This means that it won't be prone to "stall out" when vacuuming thick fabric or carpeting. Next, it was so much more quiet than our old vacuum. You can still carry on a relatively normal conversation while vacuuming. I have tinnitus in both ears, so I am very sensitive to noise and this vacuum is a blessing. Our old canister used a sliding cover on the wand extension to control the strength of the suction. This new model actually adjusts the speed of the motor. This is another "noise" plus - slowing the motor significantly reduces noise as well. The best part of this vacuum is the strength of the suction! We have WTW carpeting that is almost 30 years old (it's a very high-quality carpet). There ARE sections that have had the nap start to flatten. The old canister would have the power head slow down and even stall in high-traffic areas. This new Kenmore has such great suction and improved brush design, so these areas look more like new after vacuuming. There is no slowing or stalling - it powers through and raises the nap. If I had to give ANY negatives, the only thing would be the HEPA filter bags. Our old vacuum used reasonably priced standard disposable bags. Because we have a medium-sized dog who sheds a lot, our bags fill up very quickly with dog hair and dander. These new bags are a little pricey and they fill up in our home after 3 or 4 cleanings. I found a couple of sources with better prices, but I wish that the vacuum had the option for standard paper-type disposable bags. Keeping that in mind, it was such a small inconvenience that I still gave a 5 star rating. I highly recommend this for anyone wanting a superior canister.
I have used Kenmore canister vacuums for years. In my opinion, they simply could not be beat. My last orange one finally broke and I ordered the new orange one. I do not understand why changes are made to things that are not broken. The new design is terrible. First, the power switch is on the canister, no longer on the wand. It is constantly getting accidentally turned off. Second, the canister shape allows for it to be overturned easily which results in both the power button AND cord retraction button being depressed. Third, the attachments being stored on the wand is an utter nightmare. They fall off and limits the use of the wand. I used to stick it back in behind furniture and now I have to wrestle the attachments off and then hold them to clean behind things. Fourth, the hardwood attachment is horrible as in it is cheap, plastic and scratches hard floors. I ended up keeping my one from my previous vacuum and I use it. The ONLY nice thing I have to say about this vacuum which I have been able to say about all my previous Kenmores is that it really *****, in a good way. It cleans considerably better than many other vacuums owned between my sister and I. Suction can't be beat.
USED ONCE SEEMED FINE BUT NOISIER THAN PREVIOUS KENMORE AND MORE BULKY, TOO MANY INFERIOR BELLS AND WHISTLES. DID NOT REALIZE SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THEE KENMORE CANISTER AND SHOULD OF HEEDED MORE TO THE NEGATIVES PEOPLE WROTE, ALL TRUE. WAS HOPING TO REPLACE A WELL SERVING PREVIOUS MODEL THAT LASTED WELL OVER 10 YEARS AND ONE PREVIOUS TO THAT WHICH HAD SIMILAR LIFE, SADLY DISAPPOINTING. PER SEARS ON LINE HAVING IT ONLY ABOUT 2 WEEKS CAN RETURN OR EXCHANGE AT ANY STORE BUT WE'LL SEE. CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS PARTICULAR MODEL AT THIS TIME. CHAT ON LINE WAS HELPFUL, CONTACTED THEM TWICE BUT WANTED PRINT OUTS OF CHAT SO I COULD SHOW TO STORE TO NO AVAIL EVEN THOUGH I WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE SENT VIA EMAIL. I GET ALL THE SALE EMAILS, ETC. BUT NO COPIES OF THE TWO CHATS NOR ARE THERE ANYTHING IN OUR ACCOUNT UNDER MESSAGES. THEY SAID THEY STAND BEHIND THIS SO WE'LL SEE; HAD HIGH HOPES TO HAVE A GREAT VACUUM FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS PLUS BUT NOT THE CASE WITH THIS ONE; APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS INSTEAD
By far the worst vacuum we have ever used. The wand is very heavy on the arms (canister weight is good). False information regarding an On/Off switch on the handle (manual on page 7 indicates that there is a "2-way On/Off Switch"- the ONLY power button is on the canister, so you have to walk over 6 feet toward the BACK of the canister to access the On/Off button. The plastic material used on this vacuum is the flimsier I've ever seen - it can not even come close to older Kenmore models (i.e Whispertone, Progressive, etc). Brand new, out of the box, new exhaust filter in place, but the emissions while in use are very much felt. Cleaning on carpet does not do the job with one pass (as compared to other similar-priced canister vacuums). Surprisingly though, it does a pretty decent job on floors(tile and wood) compared to other vacuums (similar class/price). There is No light on suction box (PowerMate), no light warning when bag is full (or when filters need be changed). Cord length is shorter than average; Can not hook wand to canister for storage unless you hang it (canister must be off the ground because the PowerMate extends below the end of the canister). Accessories attach to the wand and fall off easily. Canister turns over very easily (because of its small footprint). Noise level is extremely high (had to wear ear muffs). All in all, this is an undesirable vacuum cleaner that one should avoid at any cost! Maneuverability/handling, carpet cleaning capability, overall design and features plus noise level are all bad! AVOID !
