To give me more bowl options and to be able to microwave (after removing the rubber threaded bowl bottom), refrigerate, and freeze foods that I have used in my Artisan, I got a great deal on a KitchenAid 5-Qt. Tilt-Head Glass Bowl with Measurement Markings and Lid (K5GB), to store foods in the refrigerator. This glass bowl, unlike the metal bowl from India that comes with the unit, will never shed any metal bits. It also gives me double bowl space for different foods that are used in the same or different recipes. The bowl, however, is heavier than the 'stainless steel' bowl, and some buyers have had theirs crack and/ or break. I also use mine as a huge mixing bowl, so I'm constantly using it off of my mixer, too. I had an issue with my bowl: it screwed on fine, but it wouldn't unscrew. After viewing an online video of another buyer's same problem, I learned that if I counterintuitively TIGHTENED the bowl FURTHER, the bottom rubber bowl threads popped out it out from the mixer bowl base! (Note that some Artisans come with the glass bowl as part of their standard package. Pro 600s, however, don't come a glass bowl at all, but a glass bowl package can be purchased separately.) Note: KitchenAid should create a glass bowl that doesn't shatter but is also lighter and can also accommodate a pouring shield. (This review was collected as part of a promotion.)
After putting it through the dishwasher for the first time it just barely touched my granite counter top and a big part of the spout came off. I was shocked. It was the exterior part so I thought it was safe as long as I didn't use it to pour anything. After a little while longer I noticed a long crack down the bowl and I hardly ever used it. No idea how that even happened. This product is way too fragile. I was heartbroken. As a food writer and photographer, it was so great to capture light into the bowl but it is not worth it. This item should be recalled.
My Husband (sweet man that he is!) gifted me the Artisan 5qt mixer for my birthday last year. On the 3rd use, a chunk of the base glass cracked and broke off, and the bowl—now broken off from the grey plastic ring that screws it into the mixer base, flew off onto the counter. I was so disappointed! Husband epoxied the grey ring back onto what was left of the glass base, and we were hopeful that it might hold, but it broke right back off on the next use. From a well-known and trusted name like Kitchenaid, this is definitely NOT the quality I was expecting! Very disappointing! Will be looking for a stainless steel relacement bowl now, as those don’t have any cheap glass or plastic parts to break off while simply mixing cake batter.
I’ve had this bowl for about a year. While the gray plastic base would sometimes get stuck in the mixer, and the bowl would unscrew from the gray plastic base, I still preferred using the glass bowl for breadmaking. This malfunction has happened to me many times, but I’ve been able to work around it until about a week ago. The gray base got stuck in the mixer base, and the glass bowl came off of the gray plastic base when I went to take the bowl off the mixer. I got the gray plastic unscrewed from the mixer base, and re-screwed it onto the glass bowl. I double checked it to make sure the bowl was securely attached, and resumed making the bread dough. I turned the mixer on, and the bowl slipped out of its gray base again, the beater hit the bowl, and the bowl shattered, throwing glass peices around. I quickly went to turn the mixer off (imagining these glass shards flying around the kitchen - with the potential of stabbing me...). Once the mixer was off, I looked down, and the spinning broken bowl had sliced my wrist open - resulting in 8 stitches... I will only be using (and recommending) the metal bowls from now on.
Its much larger than the stainless bowl. The measurements on the side are so convenient. and I like being able to see when ingredients are fully mixed. Nice having 2 mixing bowls instead of having to wash and dry between batters and creams etc. The bowl can be placed in both the freezer and the microwave (after removing the rubber thread ring, which came pre-installed). Love that it has a lit for easy storing. The only drawback is that it's a little tricky to line up to lock it on to the mixer (This review was collected as part of a promotion.)
I placed an order for this item and it showed to be in stock at my local Hometown Sears. I thought great, I can just run in and pick it up, but when I contacted them a couple days later, they said they never received an order request to fill. I called Sears to have them place the order on their end, an ESL female tried to help me and ended up confirming she was able to place my order and it would be at the store Jan 24 for me to pickup. It was never shipped, it's Feb 22 and my order still shows processing. Do yourself a favor, stay away from Sears/Kmart, their financial woes are being passed along to the customer.
