Here is how to use the shield with good results: (1) Make sure the shield is compatible with your bowl. (2) Mix in dry ingredients on LOW speed. It will keep the flour from flying out of the bowl. (3) Pour liquids slowly, hitting the spout on the shield. It will flow down to the sides of the bowl. This is especially convenient for incorporating sugar water into egg whites. I love my shield and use it every time I use the mixer. I have had my setup for over 24 years and have made over 1,000 cakes with it. I am a very messy cook and the shield has been a lifesaver.
I checked to be sure this pour shield is meant to fit my mixer model, K45SS, and it is. But, the shield won't stay on the bowl. It seems as if it is just a bit too big, so the tension is too much, and the ends pop out of the groove they're supposed to fit into. Doesn't sound like much, but it renders the item useless. Too bad; it's a great idea, poorly executed, in my book.
I have the 4.5 Qt Kitchen Aid stand mixer, and I got this pour shield to help prevent the dust cloud that inevitably happens when you add flour to the mixing bowl (even if the machine is off!) The shield "fits" the metal bowl that came with the machine fine, but you really have to pay attention to the alignment of the tabs around the **** that hold it in place. I use those words lightly though, because stay in place the shield does not. It is easily shaken or knocked loose and rotates freely on top of the bowl, so you do have to be somewhat careful when adding ingredients through the spout. Eggs slide down the chute nicely though flour sometimes doesn't and you have to push it with a spatula or shake the pour shield to get everything in. The pour open is also somewhat narrow and steep, and I think I would have preferred a wider opening or longer extension. Does it help with prevent some dust from escaping? Maybe a reduction of 90% but still sometimes a little flour will rise up out of the wide cutout for the paddle, but liquids will be largely contained. You do have to remove the shield to tilt the mixer motor back when removing the bowl. For me, a design that allows it to more firmly grip the bowl would have been better.
The pouring shield for my mixer doesn't fit but i still make it work by adjusting the shield a little bit. Kitchenaid really needs to redesign their shields to fit ALL their bowl sizes.
I have had the same experience as most of the people posting. I wish I had read these before purchasing this. It does not fit any bowls I use with the mixer. Terrible product, I expected more from this company seeing as though I’ve had great experiences with the rest of the attachments I’ve purchased.
