How do I remove the water filter housing on my Kenmore Trio refrigerator so that I can replace the water line?
Report This
I have a Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator model number 795.77253601. The water line is leaking. I have a replacement water line to replace the leaking one. I cannot reach into the back of the water filter housing to remove the old tube and replace it with the new tube. Is there a way to remove the water filter housing so that I can access the area in the back of the housing where the water tube attaches to the water filter?

Yes, you can remove the water filter housing to access the water lines. Here are some steps that should help you access and change the water lines on the back of the water filter housing:
Unplug the refrigerator to completely disconnect electrical power. Turn off the water supply to the refrigerator.
Remove the water filter from the filter housing.
Remove the screw that secures the front of the filter housing to the roof of the refrigerator.
Remove the front part of the housing from the back portion that the filter screws into. There are some catches on the back part that hold the front part in place. Release these catches to remove the front part of the housing.
The back portion of the water filter housing is attached to the roof of the refrigerator compartment with a peg protruding from the roof. Carefully release the back portion of the housing from this peg. It will slide off.
The water lines are attached to the back of the filter housing with John Guess fittings. To release the water line that you are replacing, push and hold the gray collar of the fitting in while pulling the water line out of the fitting. The new line will simply push into the fitting. Give the new water line a slight tug to make sure that it is properly seated in the fitting.
Replace the water line and reassemble the housing in reverse order.

Lyle, can you provide more detail on how to separate the front portion of the cover from the back? How do you release the catches? I can not having success. Thanks!

Josh, did you get further clarification on how to remove the water filter housing? I removed the screw, but cannot seem to get the front part of the housing separated from the back part.

Once the front screw is removed, simply pull on the whole housing, pulling it straight towards you. The two water lines connected to the back of the housing itself will probably need to be pushed in from the back side of the refrigerator to give them slack so you can pull on the housing. The back is held up to the ceiling of the inside of the refrigerator with a collar. There are no hidden screws other than the one in front. Again, just remove the front screw and pull on the whole housing straight out towards you. With the hoses resisting it will take quite a bit of effort.
