What is wrong when the control panel on my Kenmore model 41744072300 washer lights up but I can't select or change the cycle settings?

My model 417.44072300 washing machine control panel will not let make selection for different cycles and I was wondering what to do.

If the lights are on but you can't make or change the cycle settings then most likely you have a stuck or shorted keypad.
One thing to check first is if the "control lock" is turned on. Press and hold the "lock" symbol for 3 seconds and see if the displays shows "LOC" or not.
There are two parts that might cause this problem. The most likely is the console 134208200 with the membrane. The 134207700 control with display is also a possibility and I'd suggest a technician check and repair this problem.
If you wish to try something there is one thing that you might attempt to do. With the washer unplugged you can remove the top and console and disconnect the ribbon connector and then reinstall it and see if the problem improves. See the image below for how to do this. You can also check for a loose or frayed connection on the ribbon.
You don't mention any error codes so if the problem is only you can't make selections then check the control lock and check the connection on the ribbon before calling service.
I hope this information helps you resolve this problem but submit another question with any additional details for further assistance.
