smoking riding lawn mower

Craftsman Rider, Model 917.272140, 20 HP, Electric Start LawnMower, automatic.
I paid $600 for this mower about a month ago, having no clue it was 14 years old, and after mowing about an hour, it froze up and would not move. It started, but would not go into gear, when the clutch was pushed in, a squealing noise and smoke comes from the under the engine. I took it to the shop where they tuned it up, installed new blades, and a drive belt was replaced, they said that was the problem. (Almost $300) Mowed one time with it and parked it, the battery died, so we replaced that. ($30) Went out to mow today, again the squealing and smoke from the front engine and it will not go into gear. I realize I could have bought a new Walmart brand rider for what I have already spent, but they never last more than 2 or 3 years on our small acreage. Any suggestions? Should I give up and write this one of, and buy a Murray/Yardman, or Bolens? I can't afford a new Craftsman, Cub Cadet, or Husquava
