Why did Kenmore refrigerator start making noise?
Report This
Recently our relatively new Kenmore refrigerator (Model # 795.7130) starting making a loud buzzing noise. The noise stops when you open one of the doors and resumes when you close them.
The noise sounds like it is coming from the back.

A Refrigerator is definitely something we depend on and when it begins to malfunction it can be a huge inconvenience. While you are waiting for an expert to respond, I have attached a helpful link below that may provide information to assist you with your question.

Thank you for your question. I can understand your concern about this noise. If the noise stops and starts when the door is opened and closed, it leads to the evaporator fan motor. Now, it does not mean the motor has failed. Unless it's a squealing noise or thumping type noise that would be from the fan blade, it will probably be normal. I'm attaching some information from the owner's manual that explains some of the normal sounds you may hear. If it's not a normal noise and if the unit is less than a year, you can have a technician check it under warranty. I'm listing a link you can access, to have a tech come out. Here is a link for the website:

Thanks Scott....I'll check out the link.
The thing is, the noise is not constant. It will do it for a while then stop. Then the next day it will do it for a couple times (usually lasting 30 mins. or so) and then stop. I just don't want to have the refigerator go out of warranty and then have it do it all the time.

I meant to add that once the ice maker stopped making ice and the back wall of the freezer where the air comes in was covered with solid ice. Tried turning off ice maker for a day. Turned it back on and it did not produce ice. The next day I defrosted the back wall with a hair dryer and turned the ice maker back on. It started working but the back wall continues to be covered with solid ice. Is this an eventual problem as well?
Thanks again

Everett, if the fan motor is running, this will indicate a problem with the defrost system. It could be from a defective board, an open element or bi-metal. If this unit is less than a year old, a technician will need to check and repair this under warranty. If you would like more assistance, I will be glad to assist you further.

Would these two issues be related? I just looked again and there is a little ice on the back wall but the vents are open whereas before they were covered.

Everett, yes these issues could be related. If the frost is getting thick enough, it can cause the temperature to warm up enough and keep the icemaker from cycling. Whatever frost you see on the outside of the panel, there will be a lot more behind it. I would recommend having a technician check this. Let me know if you would like more assistance.

The ice maker seems to be working fine. However the noise has gotten louder starting today. Below is a link to the sound that is coming from the back of the refrigerator. As I mentioned before it stops when you open a door (or even the freezer door) but resumes when they are closed.

Everett, the back panel may need to be removed to see what is happening. Everything in the freezer including the drawer will need to be removed, to get the panel out and it can be a little difficult. I recommend having a technician make this check. If you would like more assistance, let me know and I will assist you further.

The noise is not constant meaning it will do it for about 25 minutes, stop for while and then resume off and on.
I assume I just need to call Sears and set something up.
Thanks

Everett, if this sound is coming from inside the freezer section, it will have to be from either the fan motor or the icemaker. It it makes the noise but stops when the door is open and starts again when it's closed, it would lead to the fan motor. It can be difficult to access this motor and I would recommend having a technician check it.

Having the same problem with my fridge. Tech just left. Second time had a tech. Last guy ordered parts; refrigerator Defrost BiMetal Thermostat and Temperature Sensor. This tech said is not the problem as there is no ice buildup anywhere. I had recorded the sound and he said doesn't help unless he could be here and hear exactly where it's coming from. Well, unless he wants to move in, that's not possible as it's sporadic and doesn't let you know when it will sound off! Is giving a refund and said nothing more to do. He did suggest unplugging fridge for a day or 2 and let everything defrost and start from scratch. So that sounds great if you have a spare fridge to put your food in for a day or two.
My husband said sh..can it and buy a new one. It is only 2 years old and this has been going on for quite some time.
Soooo disappointed in Kenmore.
