how do I get these cooktop knobs back on?
GE Profile 30" built-in Electric Cooktop, Model PP912BMBB; purchased at Great Indoors (Broomfield, CO) 2010 along with an entire house full of other appliances for a new house
I removed the 6 knobs to clean them. I checked the user manual beforehand, it says this if perfectly fine. I cleaned them by hand with hot soapy water. I could easily replace the 4 big ones (element temp control), but I can't get the 2 little ones (control lock and front-right element selector) "seated" back on properly. They won't go down all the way. I see that there's a flattened side on the post that needs to match up with the flattened side inside the knob opening. That is not the problem. The problem is the knob will not push all the way down. Looking inside with a flashlight, it looks like partway down inside the knob, there is a plastic ridge that runs about half-way up the space where the post fits. (Does that make sense?) Anyway, I think the cooktop post gets hung on that. I am afraid to push really hard past this plastic thingie for fear of breaking it and/or the knob. My husband tried, and he is afraid to push any harder for fear of breaking the COOKTOP! He thought he saw the glass cooktop surface kinda flexing as he was pushing. Yikes!
Someone originally got these knobs ON, so it must be possible. What is the trick to getting these 2 knobs back on? I promise I will NEVER take them off again.
