I know I like lots of ice in my tea, especially during these hot days of summer. I will be happy to help you with this.
Several parts work together to get water to the ice maker. Since you did not indicate any issue with the water dispenser, it sounds like the water supply from the house to the refrigerator is fine. Start by making sure the shut off arm on the ice maker has not been locked in the off position. Next I recommend you put water into the ice maker, give it enough time for the water to freeze and see if it makes ice and ejects it into the ice container. If the ice maker is working fine that way, then you may have a blocked water line in the refrigerator. Check the fill tube behind the ice maker and see if it is frozen.
Next check the water solenoid valve on the back of the refrigerator. The solenoid receives a signal from the ice maker which tells the solenoid to open the valve and send water up to the ice maker. You can test this part with a multi-meter.
WARNING: Before you begin your parts testing and repairs, turn off the power supply to the refrigerator. You can do that by unplugging the power cord from the socket or the breakers in the circuit box. Some parts may have sharp edges that can cause serious cuts. Use caution and where heavy gloves when possible.
Turn off the water supply to the refrigerator. You will need to disconnect the water hose from the water valve. There will be water in the hose so you may want to have a small bucket and some towels handy. The solenoid part of the valve will have a couple of wires connected to the electrical posts on it. You will need to disconnect the wires. Be sure to pull them by the metal connectors – do not pull on the wires themselves.
Following the directions that came with your multi-meter, set it to read Ohms. You will want one each of the test rods from the meter to touch one each of the solenoid’s electrical posts. You should get a reading between 200 to 500 ohms. If there is no reading or the numbers on the multi-meter do not stop, you will need to replace the valve. It is has failed. While you are testing the valve, check to see if you have a build up of white powder on it or in the water tubing. Any build up is a sign that you have hard water which can cause parts like the valve and the ice maker to fail. If you have hard water, failed parts need to be replaced. The build up cannot be completely removed. However, once you have replaced the parts, you can protect your investment by adding an inline water filter to the water tubing coming from the house to the water valve.
