I first saw this in the store, I should of checked it out more while there but there was no salesperson handy, so I just made sure it had what I wanted. Heavy duty, check, width & length of stitches option, check, my favorite stitch, check, button hole check. went home and found it on line, (cheaper too) read the reviews, although some of them made me nervous I decided to gamble and ordered it. I have to admit the instructions could be better, but I am so far happy with this machine. it is strong enough to go through very thick material, and is very basic and simple. Threading it could be easier. and when it says drop in bobbin that is what it means, I thought my last one was called a drop in but it must be top loading because I had to guide the thread inside the compartment, this one you do not, you literally drop it in. A couple of times I thought it was broken but it was operator error, and I didn't find any help in the instruction manual for what I was doing wrong. I wanted the needle to move to the left, which I knew it could because I had moved it earlier, but it wouldn't move, thought I broke it, looked in manual but nothing to help me, finally I figured out I had the width of stitch in the wrong position. So all is good. So far I am completely satisfied with this machine. I wanted something strong, easy, no computer, very basic and I got it. Now I am hoping it lasts for many years.
I've had a Kenmore manufactured by Singer for years and it kept messing up so I put it in the shop and bought this Singer 4423 Heavy Duty Sewing Machine. First of all, it's not made of metal, just hard plastic. Second, it cannot handle sewing with upholstery thread because you cannot set the tension on the bobbin as it has been factory set and glued in place. Once you get the upper thread tension properly adjusted to sew with the upholstery thread, it is nearly impossible to pull the sewn cloth from under the needle. I am so terribly disappointed, I cannot put it into words. I thought Singer was at least a half-way decent brand, but apparently that is no long true.
I'm very satisfied with the workmanship of my Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine
