I was shocked at the size when the associate brought this item out to my van. With the four back seats down and taken out of the box, it barely fit in the back. One person installation onto our existing factory Honda roof rack was simple with bolts and nuts (plastic wing nuts). It is just out of the way of our sun roof and back hatch so it's perfect in my opinion. I haven't put anything in it but did drive around town with it installed, I honestly didn't know it was there. No noise, no noticeable drag. Storage could be an issue if you don't have somwhere for it but this gives you a bunch of room on your car/truck/van. I am looking forward to using this for our 13 hr drive on vacation with 7 people. This will add siginificant space! With a few discounts I scored this for just over two bills ($206 to be exact) and it seems like a fantastic deal based on the other models I looked it. Recommend!
The ad states that you can 'sit back and enjoy the ride knowing that all your precious cargo is shielded from the elements.' We sat back thinking that the rain outside our car would not be inside the car carrier... we were WRONG. Your items will get wet if it is raining outside and you are moving. Just beware!
After months of research and comparisons, we purchased the X-Cargo Sport 20 for our 2012 Toyota Highlander, and the 20 cu. feet served our storage needs quite well for our drive from Texas to Montana for a family of 6. Material, build and finish is well done and comparable to the other cargo boxes that are 3 times the price of the X-Cargo Sport, and the lock keeps contents secured, giving you piece of mind when you have to leave your car at the parking lot. We drove through strong winds and rain in Colorado, and Montana, and our contents stayed dry. The wind noise is present, but not disturbing. The box works best when the heaviest cargo is stored in the space between where the crossbars attach to the box and will prevent from bobbing at higher speeds. An outstanding box, theres no need to buy the overpriced cargo boxes, the X-Cargo fit our vehicle beautifully, thanks to the low profile roof rails.
The item is great and very useful, but Don at the auto center is what made my day. I arrived 2 minutes after closing and he allowed us to pick the car topper up. He saved me an extra 30mile trip and I am very greatful.
I am impressed with this car top but it is rather thin and flimsy. The only issue I had was that it was making a knocking noise the first time I used it. I have a 2005 Trailblazer, I don't know if this makes a difference or not. I wedged something under the front of the car top and the noise stopped. I know have an old pillow in a garbage bag in a pillow case to keep under it when its used. I would also suggest using an extra strap across the whole thing as a safety precaution. I will do this in the future.
It's deceptively large. The box it comes in is mammoth-sized. FYI: shipping costs for this thing is high - for me in FL shipping was about ~$220. The box would NOT fit in the back of my 2013 Nissan Quest with all seats down. This all said, if you're looking to purchase one, come prepared with either a pickup truck/large van/minivan with stow-n-go seats. This could fit in Honda/Toyota minivans if the seats are removed. However, the seats don't come out of the Nissan, only fold flat. Based on the other reviews, I knew going in there would be a chance I would have to install the carrier in the parking lot of Sears, so I also brought along a step stool. I did end up installing it by myself in the parking lot - it took about 15-20 minutes going slowly. It's really that easy. The hardest part is just the awkwardness of moving the carrier since it's so big.
As for the carrier performance, I haven't used it with luggage yet, but I did put two strollers and the step stool in it for the 1 1/2 hour ride back home. I also ended up driving through windy rain for the last hour. The van drove fine with the carrier attached. Since it was still raining when I got home, I couldn't open the carrier to see if the rain stayed out. I did check the next morning - and this is why I gave the carrier 4/5 stars - the rain/dew that collected on the lip of the carrier lid poured into the carrier as I opened it. Because that happened, I can't comment if the carrier remained dry during the rain. I did notice some droplets at the front of the carrier where the lid water didn't fall on, but that could have been dew formation and not rain penetration.
So far, I'm impressed with the ease of installation, size, and cost. I'm looking forward to using this with luggage in a couple weeks on a family vacation.
Nice carrier, lots of room. Easy to put on by myself.
It seems to be a great product. A lil more flimsy then I thought it would be but I am satisfied with the product. Lots of room , easy to install, locks down good and I am very pleased. I have not used it in the rain but will do so this month and will find out if it leaks water when you drive. I think a simple adjustment of some foam weather strip around the edges will solve any leak that may occur from water coming up under the lip of the unit. Maybe it wont leak , cross my fingers... All in all, great product...
Can't beat the price for the cubic feet provided. Not as sleek as the high end competition out there, but it works and stores a ton. I had the exact model for thousands of miles of highway travelling and after a decade a crack developed in the plastic that required a new addition.
Sever rain showers allowed a little water intrusion. Nothing terrible and won't ruin anything but paper, but in flash flood intensity level rain, I experienced drops of water inside the compartment and on some articles in there. My last one never had this issue but maybe it has to do with the new mounting hardware? It is different than my previous car top, and takes a few more minutes to install and remove, but it is very secure.
Easy to install. Fits an amazing amount of luggage. Only complaint is that the lock can be difficult to open.
