Purchased this for my 2011 RAV4. This is the perfect size for this vehicle. When place as far back on the roof (right in front of radio antenna), the cargo box stops right before the curvature of the roof starts going downward at the front of the vehicle. I believe this minimized air getting caught under the cargo box and creating drag. While driving, I haven't noticed anything different. Fuel efficiency is about the same. I am sure this would be different if there was some cross-wind, but nothing of that happening in NYC during this review. The weight of the box is very light. Easy enough to be picked up by myself. Installation was quite easy, 15-20 minutes to install with no additonal hardware required. Since the RAV4 has a hatchback door, it was easy enough to stand on the rear bumper to access the cargo box. The construction is OK. The shell is made of semi-hard plastic. There is definitely flex to it. This product is not made of hard plastic, but I am sure something like that would have cost twice, maybe three time more. For the cost and size of this cargo box, it is a good buy. I was lucky enough that this box fits perfectly for the RAV4. I wish we could upload photos here and I would show how aesthetically pleasing it looks on my RAV4.
X-Cargo XL - great price, disappointed with durability, wind noise and wind turbulence. I bought this product due to the price and reviews. However, I am disappointed. Driving while it is empty is NOT an option. It bangs against the roof at speeds over 60mph (I had to do this because I purchased out of town due to availability locally). Shakes a lot at almost any speed. Even when full, noticeable wind noise in cabin of vehicle, not too bad but I can definitely tell it's up there due to the wind noise and drag. Lid is very cheaply made, flexes a lot when opening. Haven't taken an actual trip yet over 100 miles but planning on one soon. I do not have high hopes I'll be satisfied with this unit and will likely return if a longer trip, loaded, does not yield a change in my review.
We we received the X Cargo Carrier as a gift and quickly retuned it. If the car was going above 50 mph the box shook violently on the top of the vehicle. When I called Sears I was told that the manufacturer suggests carrying around 45 pounds of weight inside the box at all times! We tried that and it didn't work, it continued to rattle violently. My husband then repositioned the carrier according to the instruction booklet. Apparently, Sears automotive department installed it incorrectly. We finally decided to return it and were told there would be a 15 percent restocking fee and we would not be reimbursed for installation even though they installed it incorrectly. It's no wonder Sears won't be around much longer. Will be taking our business elsewhere from now on.
Slim design, but holds a lot of stuff. Really like the elbow hinges. Carrier locks with a key.
Surprisingly enough space for about 7 to 9 travel club bags ( maybe more), went through a few strong storms without any leaks or issues, holds well while cruising 65-75 mph.
If its 90° outside, do not leave top lid open for more than 15 min, or will start caving in from the opening brackets to the rear of it, but is defenitly worth what is advertised for.
this carrier helped a lot, my 5 suitcases from all my family fit in it and we had more space inside our truck when we went on vacations, thanks
Bought this carrier 3 weeks ago and it was awesome. Easy to install and price was great. We were able to fit a lot of stuff. I definitely recommend this product!
Works really well. Holds all the luggage for a family of five on a road trip!
Looks good can't wait to use it! Got it cheap used a coupon!
excellent product for the price. a bit flimsy, but it performs as promised. lightweight and easy installment for one person. easily fits two "check-in" sized bags and one "carry-on" sized bag with plenty of room for knick-knacks. hinges and lock work fine after three road trips of 500 miles or more, but can see them malfunctioning at any time. if you want a more durable, hard-shelled cargo box, with the passenger-side load, pay the extra $300-$400 for the name brand boxes. but if you want a significant upgrade from a cargo bag and have enough space to store it, then go with this product for fractions of the cost.
